About Us

  1. a whirling mass of water, esp. one in which a force of suction operates, as a whirlpool.
  2. something likened to a whirlpool, as in violent activity or the tendency to draw into its current everything that surrounds it.

Welcome to the Vortex Board Company, specialists in foam design and technology. We are the leaders in soft surf technology and foam packaging. With the most state of the art factory and exclusive, futuristic materials at our disposal, Vortex represents the next episode of foam design. Proprietor Brian Peterson has combined a decade of experience and research to bring you the most advanced foam products on the market. Vortex, the future begins right here.

Brian Peterson's Credentials

Conditioned over a decade plus of experience and backed by the most advanced technology in the industry, Brian Peterson has launched the first board and foam company to utilize its own, original method of manufacturing. "I didn't try to do this - I just did what I did", Peterson claims about the conception of Vortex. An experienced waterman himself, Peterson grew fascinated by the work behind the boards he was riding. He moved up the production ranks at Toobs Bodyboards Inc. in Morro Bay, from huffing foam planks all the way up to manager of R&D and the custom board program. He gained a wealth of knowledge from president Buzz Morasca and New Zealand craftsman Nick Meseritz "Mez", and soon developed an equaled reputation for quality and futuristic designs. The top bodyboarder's in the world were blowing up his pager for his boards, including legendary world champions. It was with the pioneers of the sport that Peterson embarked on a critical collaborative effort that continues to this day, handcrafting the boards that would transport them out of some life and death situations on the world's most dangerous waves. The brainstorming accelerated, and the designs continued to advance along with new materials available. Add in Peterson's work with the inventor of the bodyboard Tom Morey, and it's crystal clear that you won't find more experience and intelligent shaper in the world. Enter the Vortex!

1993-1997 R & D director and Custom Shaper, Toobs Bodyboards INC.

Worked with President Buzz Morasca and New Zealand innovator Nick Meseritz "Mez" as the company expanded from small producer to international leader in quality and design.

1997-2001 San Diego Operations Manager, Foam Design INC.

Took the Kentucky based foam giant to the next stratosphere, bringing immaculate craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology to brands such as Mike Stewart Inc., Challenger, and Easy Rider.

2001-persent President, Vortex INC.

Using experience and technology to his advantage, Peterson has launched the first board and foam company to utilize its own original method of manufacturing.

More About Vortex

What do you get when you combine a 30 year-old shaping protege with half a million dollars worth of high tech robotic machinery? The most technologically advanced boogies for starters, boards that are accurate to within a bee's dick of an inch and feature computer programmed enhancements that are just not possible to duplicate by even the most skilled shaper. If you have never heard of CNC cutting machines, the same machines that have revolutionized the surfboard industry, then it's about time you found out what is already taking bodyboard shaping to the next level, and then some.

Brian Peterson is a name you may not have heard too much of, and there's good reason for that. BP's spent the last 8 years in a cave, logging up 1000's of hours on his PC learning the highly technical design programs that control the movements of the CNC machine. CNC is the industry term for a Computer Numerical Controller. A machine that is controlled by data input from design programs that cost you thousands of dollars and, your programming skills, you could use it to shape you your own foam Pamela Anderson. CNC machines are used by leading companies such as Oakley and Channel Island Surf Boards, who rely on the CNC's accuracy to build the molds for their glasses and perfect pre-shaped boards.

Don't think for one minute that BP is a straight up techno geek; this boy has some serious shaping pedigree. He received his degree in shape-ology from O.G. shaper Buzz Morasca within the hallowed walls of the Toobs factory. He regularly bounces ideas off his good friend Tom Morey and his handiwork has graced the riding abilities of top pros like Roach, McBride, Maligro, Paul Roach, Raffi Meyer, Chris Won, Ian Mattie, Damien Kingy, Tamega, A. Taylor, Stewart, Pat Caldwell, Jack Linholm, Andre Botha, Brett Lillyman, Sebastian Solovin, Mike Murphy, Brian Wise, and James Murdock, and Zack Baz. BP is also responsible for translating the lifetime of experience; knowledge and progressive thinking of some of the most respected bodyboarder into a range that has re-defined the way we look at performance bodyboards. Brian and his CNC are responsible for innovations such as nose bulbs, full contoured deck systems and multi density core compositions. Ever wondered what makes Brian's boards ride so well? Its Brian's ability to translate years of surfing, manufacturing and cutting edge designs into a 3 dimensional profile which is then, transferred into the brain of the CNC. The result is a piece of foam with one heck of synergy.
